Richard Jefferson practices in the areas of intellectual property and business law, and represents clients within media, entertainment, technology, action sports, and lifestyle brands. He began his legal career as in-house counsel at a major record label, and held associate positions with a top 100 law firm and a small boutique entertainment and sports law firm prior to co-founding the successful law corporation in 2003 that evolved into M.E.T.A.L.™ Law Group, LLP. He has extensive experience in putting together ventures, negotiating deals, and managing intellectual property portfolios for companies within the sub fields of media, music, film, television, fashion/apparel, animation, video gaming, beverage, and interactive entertainment. Examples of services include forming and maintaining entities (Corporations or LLCs), drafting and negotiating various types of contracts, protecting and managing intangible asset portfolios (i.e., intellectual property), resolving disputes amicably to avoid litigation, and serving as litigation counsel, if necessary.
He is an active member of the Business Law Section and Intellectual Property Section of the California State Bar, Beverly Hills Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, National Association of Recording Industry Professionals, ASCAP, BMI, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. (The Grammys), and he is a recommended attorney for many organizations.
Mr. Jefferson earned a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University and received his Juris Doctor from Southwestern University School of Law where he participated in the prestigious accelerated two year SCALE program.
