Tips for Keeping Legal Costs Down

April 7, 2011

The biggest things clients can do to save legal fees are:

1- Be organized. The more orderly and promptly you can provide information to your attorney, the less time s/he will need to spend trying to make sense of it—time that they are charging you for.

2- Be diligent about providing documents/information. I spend a lot of time chasing down clients about things they have promised to provide me with, but don’t (e.g., documents, information, etc). While the occasional reminder is not a big deal, I often have no choice but to bill a client for such time when they force me to remind them 4, 5, 6 times (or more).

3- Keep calls/emails to the necessary minimum. Though some attorneys don’t “turn on the clock” as soon as they get a call or email from a client, many do (especially at larger firms where every billable minute is crucial). Further, even attorney’s that don't desire to bill clients for occasional communications have no choice when clients calls or email multiple times a day. While it is important to communicate with your attorney, there is a proper way to do it. Keep communications concise, on-point, and only as frequent as is necessary.
