How Do I Patent an Idea?

Patent law distinguishes between ideas and inventions--ideas are not patentable, whereas inventions are.  However, both of these terms are "terms of art", which means that they have acquired special meaning in a legal setting.  In this article, Patrick Richards explains when and why your idea might be patentable, even if you do not think it has yet progressed to the invention stage.
