Can I Patent My Invention?

June 3, 2011

Because Patrick Richards is a patent lawyer, potential clients often ask him whether they can patent something which they have invented. In this article, he provides some guidance to people with this question on their minds. Mr. Richards explains how four statutes interact to define which inventions are patentable. One explains which inventions are patentable. Another adds conditions to limit the universe of patentable inventions. A third limits the subject matter of the invention on which a patent is sought. Finally, a fourth statute explains how you specify the subject matter of your patent (in other words, what your patent application needs to contain).
