Buying startups in order to shutter them

Roughly a year ago, Google purchased Picnik, an app which lets its users edit all their online photos from one easy source.  Picnik, which was an app on Facebook, is being closed by Google and moved to Google+.  This article explains that this is a common motivation for big businesses purchasing startups, and examines why Google (and other big market players) might purchase a startup simply to shut it down.
