The recent receession has been called the sharpest economic downturn since the Great Depression by a number of sources. This article analyzes bankruptcy filings in the Northern District of California (which includes San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and a number of other major cities) and finds that bankruptcy filings across all chapters increased sharply in the period representing the worst of the downturn (2007-10).
